In your consultation with Dr. Feldmar, based on his examination and your medical history, he will tell you if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck. You are probably a good candidate if you:

• Are unhappy with the appearance of your abdomen because of loose, hanging skin; pockets of fat that remain even after losing weight with diet and exercise; or a bulge due to separated abdominal muscles
• Are in generally good health, with no medical conditions that increase your risks
• Are not significantly overweight and at a stable weight
• Do not smoke, or are able to quit smoking for several weeks before and after your surgery
• Have realistic expectations for the results of the surgery

Pregnancy and weight gain can stretch the skin of the abdomen beyond its limits of resilience. After a child is born or a significant amount of weight is lost, the skin can remain loose, wrinkled, and saggy, even hanging in folds. The abdominal muscles can separate and weaken to the point where no toning or strength-building routine can eliminate the bulge and restore a flat, firm belly.

You’ll need some time for rest and recovery at home after your surgery. You should plan to take about two weeks off from work or longer if your job requires lifting or strenuous activity.

You should expect to experience some discomfort in the first few days, which you can manage with pain medication. You’ll find it difficult to stand fully upright or bend at the waist, for example, and may need help getting up from bed for the first two or three days. You may also experience some swelling and bruising in the treated area.

Dr. Feldmar will provide you with detailed instructions on how to take care of yourself as you recover, when to see him for follow-up appointments, and how to reach him with any concerns. You can resume light activities and some exercise after about two weeks, gradually building up to your typical activity level by about six weeks after surgery. Strenuous exercises that use your abdominal muscles, like sit-ups or weightlifting, may require a bit more time.

The best candidates for a tummy tuck those who are at or near a healthy weight. Some excess fat may be removed using liposuction, but a tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure. The surgery removes only targeted pockets of diet- and exercise-resistant fat in the abdomen and waistline.

The main incision for a tummy tuck is placed very low across the abdomen, just above the pubic area, where the resulting scar is easily concealed under clothing or a bathing suit. In a full tummy tuck, you’ll have a second scar around your belly button, which will not be noticeable once the scar has faded to be close to your skin tone.

The improvements made in a tummy tuck are long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight. Significant weight gain or a future pregnancy can stretch your skin again and cause your abdominal muscles to weaken and separate.

A tummy tuck, like all plastic surgery procedures, carries some risks of infection, blood clots, and poor healing.
